Days ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, Facebook Inc has decided to ban advertisements for weapon accessories and protective equipment in the US with immediate effect until at least two days post the ceremony, reported Reuters.

The tech giant said on Saturday ads for accessories such as gun safes, vests and gun holsters in the country is prohibited on its platform after the US Capitol attack by Donald Trump supporters on January 6.

In a blog post, Facebook said, “We already prohibit ads for weapons, ammunition and weapon enhancements like silencers. But we will now also prohibit ads for accessories.”

In a letter to Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, three US Senators on Friday asked him to permanently block advertisements of products that are clearly designed to be used in armed combat.

According the Senators, all being Democrats, Facebook must take this and other actions to “hold itself accountable for how domestic enemies of the United States have used the company’s products and platform to further their own illicit aims.”

Following warnings from the FBI of armed protests being planned for Washington and all 50 state capitals in the run-up to the inauguration, security has been on high alert in the US.

Facebook said on Friday that it was blocking the creation of any new Facebook events, which are in close proximity to the White House, US Capitol in Washington DC and also state capitol buildings.
