A 17-year-old student in Florida was taken into custody on Thursday for brining stolen, loaded gun onto a high school campus. The unidentified student walked into Miramar High School’s foyer just before 8 a.m. when the assistant principal told school resource officers that he was carrying a gun in his backpack. Soon, the school staff detained him and found a Glock 26 handgun loaded with one 9 mm round in the chamber and a drum-style 9 mm magazine with 39 rounds.

When questioned, the student “did not have a consistent story as to how he obtained the firearm” and also refused to provide proof of purchase or lawful ownership, the arrest report said, New York Daily reported.

A spokeswoman for Broward County Public Schools told local media that they could not reveal how the assistant principal found out that the student was carrying a gun in his backpack.

Jenie Semors, whose grandson is a freshman at the school, told CBS Local that she can’t believe this is happening just 7 days into the new school year

“It’s awful! I didn’t know that, you can’t even send your kids to school today, a gun, really?” she told the outlet.
