An explosion occurred around the Oak Park Avenue in Illinois’ Berwyn in an empty office building owned by MacNeal Hospital. According to the crew present on site, the explosion was accidental and caused due to a gas leak.

The Berwyn fire department, along with the police, was the first to respond to the incident, which occurred at 2 pm on Tuesday, reported CBS Chicago quoting authorities. The responders are present at the 3300 block of Oak Park Avenue.

While the fire department is currently attempting to contain the fire and the active gas leak, police efforts of evacuating the surrounding buildings are underway, according to CBS Chicago.

Residents of the area have been requested to stay clear of Oak Park Avenue and Grove Avenue until the situation has come under control and authorities pronounce the area safe, CBS reported quoting a news release.

Loyola Medicine’s spokesperson confirmed that the building, where the accident occurred, was owned by MacNeal Hospital but was an empty office. The spokesperson further confirmed that no employee was affected by the explosion and the hospital’s emergency room also did not sustain any impact in operations, reported CBS.
