President-elect
Joe Biden consolidated his lead over incumbent Donald Trump in the US
election by winning the traditionally Republican stronghold state of Georgia,
taking his electoral votes tally to 306, AFP quoted network projections on
Friday.

Most major US
media houses called the race in Georgia in Biden’s favour, who becomes the
first Democrat to win the southern state since Bill Clinton in 1992.

Meanwhile,
Trump added 15 electoral votes to his tally, which now stands at 232, by
winning the state of North Carolina, US media projected.

Made up of
538 electors, the Electoral College formally elects the President after the November
3 election.

Biden won
in 25 states, including the traditional Democrat strongholds of New York and California,
apart from his home state Delaware.

He also flipped five states Trump won en
route to his victory in 2016, including the states of Arizona, Georgia,
Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, which was the decisive factor in this election.

Trump won
25 states, including big prizes in Texas and Florida, as well as Indiana, Kentucky,
Missouri and Ohio, all of which he won in 2016 as well. Four of Nebraska’s five
electoral college votes went in Trump’s favour, with one going for Biden.

The former vice-president
won three of Maine’s four electoral votes, with Trump winning the other.

Biden will be formally inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States in a traditional ceremony on January 20 at the US Capitol building, after his running mate Kamala Harris is sworn-in as the vice-president the same day.
