Mitch McConnell, the United States Senate minority leader, got a booster vaccination shot against COVID-19 on Monday after following “the advice of experts”.

The Republican leader also backed the inoculation drive in the United States and said that the available COVID-19 vaccines were safe. McConnell also appealed to the Americans in order to boost vaccination numbers.

The GOP leader wrote on Twitter, “Today, I followed the advice of experts and my doctors and received a booster vaccination for COVID-19. Mountains of evidence tell us these shots are safe and effective. I continue to encourage all Americans to speak with their doctors and get vaccinated.”

United States President Joe Biden also got his Pfizer booster dose at the White House on Monday. He had previously received his second dose of the Pfizer COVID vaccine on-camera in January earlier this year.

The news comes after the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention gave a nod to the Pfizer dose, which can now be used as a booster shot for certain categories.

Biden wrote in a tweet, “If you got the Pfizer vaccine in January, February, or March — and you are over 65, have a medical condition, or work in a frontline job — you can go get your booster.”

More than 2 million people have already received a booster dose of the vaccine in the United States even though it was only recommended for those with immune system disorders until Friday.

Many experts say that this indicates that many Americans were not willing to wait for the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration‘s green light to receive an additional dose.

Health officials have said that boosters should be offered to people who are aged 65 and older. The booster shots will be extended to nursing home residents and those ages 50 to 64 who have underlying health conditions.
