A shootout took place just before 6 pm on Sunday at Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana, according to the police.

According to the Greenwood Police Department, a lone shooter, believed to be an adult male, entered the mall’s food court at 6 p.m. with a rifle and numerous magazines of bullets. The man then opened fire on the mall, killing three people and injured another two.

The GPD also stated on Sunday that the shooter was killed by a citizen armed with a handgun. The suspect’s assailant is fully cooperating with police.

The suspect was described by police as an adult male armed with a rifle and multiple magazines. No identification or motivation has been released.

A backpack was found in a restroom near the shooting scene, GPD said. It is unknown who the backpack belongs to, but due to its suspicion, the Johnson County Bomb Squad is investigating.

More press conferences will be scheduled throughout the evening, according to GPD, to provide more information.

“We are sickened by another type of incident like this in our country, in our city,” Asst. Chief Chris Bailey of the IMPD stated.

GPD Chief Jim Ison spoke to the media outside the mall on Sunday, offering information about the investigation.

“As you can imagine, this type of situation is horrible,” Ison remarked. “It’s rocked us to our core.”

According to GPD, more press conferences will be held throughout the evening to present additional information.

Someone inside the mall reportedly told a 13News reporter that they heard 20 gunshots in the food court at the time of the incident. According to IMPD, the shots appear to have been fired only in the food court area.

Residents are advised to avoid the area while first responders continue to clear the mall. IMPD indicated at a press conference at 7:45 p.m. that there is no known ongoing danger.

Several police units are scanning the mall to make sure no one has been hurt or is still hiding out.
