Around 1:55 a.m., the Greyhound bus collided with the parked commercial vehicles on the exit ramp, resulting in a tragic outcome. State police confirmed that three individuals on board the bus lost their lives, while at least 14 others sustained severe injuries.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and four of the injured were airlifted to hospitals by helicopter, with ten others transported via ambulance. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the occupants of the commercial vehicles involved in the crash.
The bus was en route from Indianapolis to St. Louis, and the driver was among those hospitalized. Greyhound spokesperson Lourdes Brown stated that the company is working closely with local authorities and arranging a relief bus for the passengers affected by the incident.
As investigations are underway, State Police spokesperson Melaney Arnold confirmed that the fatalities and injuries were limited to those aboard the Greyhound bus. The commercial vehicles involved in the crash were semi-tractor-trailers.
The severity of the crash led to the closure of westbound traffic on I-70. However, state police managed to reopen one lane between mileposts 28 and 24, easing the flow of traffic in the affected area.
