The cause of death of Brian Laundrie, Gabby Petito’s fiancé whose disappearance sparked a media frenzy late last summer, was confirmed on Monday.

Laundrie died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to an autopsy report by the Sarasota Medical Examiner.

According to the medical examiner’s findings, Laundrie’s skeleton remains were discovered in a densely wooded region of the Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County in October, and had been submerged in “up to three feet and possibly more” of water for an extended length of time before being discovered.

Due to “severe carnivore activity” such as scavenging from coyotes, mice, and raccoons, only Laundrie’s skeleton survived, according to officials.

A bag with a tent and flares, a piece of paper and a red cap with the brand “Moab Coffee Roasters,” and a wooden box with a tiny notebook and photos were among the things retrieved from the area where Laundrie’s remains were discovered, according to the 47-page report.

According to the FBI, Laundrie wrote in a journal recovered with his remains that he was responsible for Gabby Petito’s death.

When Laundrie’s body was discovered, he had been the target of a weeks-long manhunt. His family was told he shot himself in the head, and his death was deemed a suicide in November, according to Laundrie family attorney Steve Bertolino.
