In a video message posted on her political Twitter account, Pelosi, a Democrat from California, said, "I am running for reelection to Congress and respectfully seek your support. I would be greatly honored by it and grateful for it."
"While we have made progress much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives. This election is crucial: nothing less is at stake than our Democracy. But we don’t agonize-we organize. I am running for re-election to Congress to deliver For The People and defend Democracy," she tweeted.
The San Francisco Democrat made history 15 years ago when she became the first female speaker of the House. She has served in Congress since 1987.
“Our democracy is at risk because the assault on the truth, assault on the U.S. Capitol and the state-by-state assault on voting rights,” she added.
Pelosi's announcement comes as a record number of House Democrats are retiring and Democrats are defending both chambers at a time when President Joe Biden's approval rating has been slipping.
While Pelosi managed to push bipartisan infrastructure bill through Congress, Biden's Build Back Bettere plan, a social safety legislation, and voting rights billl remains stalled. Democrats are facing a big question: whether it is time for the party to give way to younger leadership?
