A student of Martin County High School, Sophie Araque-Liu, has won the 2022 Doodle for Google contest. The 16-year-old had painted a picture where she is hugging her mother, which can now be seen on the search engine’s homepage. For the yearly Doodle for Google contest, one participant each was selected from all the U.S. states and territories. This year, the theme for the contest was “I care for myself by …”.

The winner is set to receive a scholarship of $30,000. Regarding the philosophy behind her artwork, Araque-Liu said, “I decided to show a different aspect of ‘I care for myself,'” she said earlier. “I care for myself by letting other people care for me. … It’s just amazing to know you still have people supporting you, and you don’t need to try to do everything on your own.”

Notably, post the announcement that Araque-Liu is the winner, her school held an assembly where the news was revealed to her by her friends.

Google had divided all the submissions into five categories based on the classes the artist belongs to-  K-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12. Then, a winner is chosen from each of these categories. From among these five finalists, the guest judges (which also included pop sensation Selena Gomez this year) for the competition select a winner. Each of these finalists is also awarded a $5,000 college scholarship.
