The Obamas, Alyssa Milano, Patricia Arquette, and others have spoken out in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to repeal nearly 50-year-old constitutional safeguards for abortion.

The court’s conservative majority voted 5-4 to overturn Roe v. Wade, with the ruling’s outcome projected to result in abortion bans in about half of the United States, including bans with no exceptions for rape or incest.

The decision came more than a month after a draft judgement by Justice Samuel Alito was leaked, indicating that the United States’ highest court was prepared to make the move.

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama both issued prepared statements via Twitter. “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, but it also relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues — attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans,” the former President’s statement read.

“I’m heartbroken for people around this country who just lost the right to make informed decisions about their own bodies,” Michelle Obama said in her statement.

Former first lady, New York senator, and Democratic presidential contender Hilary Clinton also issued a comment, stating, “Most Americans believe the decision to have a child is one of the most sacred decisions there is, and that such decisions should remain between patients and their doctors. Today’s Supreme Court opinion will live in infamy as a step backward for women’s rights and human rights.”

Other people of the entertainment industry have also spoken out in the hours since the decision was made public. Alyssa Milano and Patricia Arquette are two well-known Hollywood women’s rights campaigners.

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling overturning #RoeVsWade will have deadly consequences, with the harm falling hardest on people of color who already face disproportionate discrimination in our country and grapple with a severe maternal mortality crisis,” Milano said in a tweet.

Arquette called the current Supreme Court an “absolute disaster,” citing the court’s decision on Thursday to overturn a century-old New York concealed carry statute. “From giving people the right to carry guns to taking away Women’s rights of autonomy over their own bodies,” she wrote. “We weren’t being reactive we saw it coming.”

Taylor Swift, who has a house in Nashville, and Tennessee is one of 13 states that have enacted trigger laws to restrict abortion within 30 days of the verdict, commented on Twitter, “I’m absolutely terrified that this is where we are – that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.”

Halle Berry expressed her “outraged” and dubbed the Supreme Court’s decision “BULLSHIT.”

“Something has to be done! Guns have more rights than women,” she wrote on Twitter. “Stop this war on women & keep your laws off of our bodies. We have to ban together & NOT accept this! We can’t just post about it, we must DO SOMETHING about it.”

Actor Jessica Biel wrote on her Instagram story, “I am enraged. You should be too. What happened today is not only a disgusting step backward for women — undermining our ability to make decisions about our own bodies… but it’s also dangerous. You didn’t ban abortion. You’ve banned safe access to abortion.”

Aisha Tyler, an actress, described it as “a terrible tragedy for all of us,” adding, “This is a dark day in American history. The Supreme Court destroyed womens’ right to choose. The result will shatter women’s lives, make children & families poorer, increase the financial burden on men & erode the American economy. “

Padma Lakshmi, host and executive producer of Top Chef and the highly acclaimed docuseries Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi, as well as actor and filmmaker Sophia Bush, both stated that the verdict would not mean the end of abortion, but rather safe access for select Americans.

“They will never end abortion. Only safe abortion. This is not about life. It’s about control. Those motherfuckers,” Bush commented, while Lakshmi started a lengthy tweet thread, stating,“People will still get abortions. These procedures won’t stop just because Roe v. Wade is overturned. This will only prevent safe, legal abortions from taking place.”

And exactly like that… Cynthia Nixon, a former New York governor candidate, highlighted how the Roe v. Wade decision indicated further rights losses. “This ruling today at the height of Pride Month is particularly devastating,” she wrote in a tweet. “The foundation upon which Roe rested is the same that has protected so many of our rights as LGBTQ+ people. Clarence Thomas says as much. We’re all in this together.”

Not only are women in Hollywood speaking out. Actors John Cho and Wilson Cruz, comedian Billy Eichner, and author Stephen King also weighed in on the decision. “Extreme minority tyranny,” Cho tweeted shortly after the court’s ruling was revealed.

Cruz urged his supporters to go out and vote. “It’s been the plan ALL A LONG,” he said in a tweet. “The ONLY thing standing in the way of the complete dissolution of the UNITED states into 2 countries where women have control over their own bodies & same-sex marriages are recognized or not is our willingness to SHOW UP in these midterms and #VOTE.”

“It’s the best Supreme Court the 19th Century has yet produced,” King responded sarcastically, while Eichner tweeted, “GET YOUR FICTIONAL HATEFUL BIBLE STORIES AND YOUR FAKE FICTIONAL RELIGIOUS BULLSHIT OUT OF OUR FUCKING LIVES. FUCK YOU!”
