The White House responded to the update on four American citizens who were kidnapped in Mexico. The Mexican government said on Tuesday that two of those four were dead, White House responded “attacks on Americans unacceptable.”

Karine Jean-Pierre, press secretary White House said that US officials are still in contact with Mexican counterparts to bring their citizens back home. She also informed that president Biden was regularly being updated.

“I can confirm that U.S. officials are in touch with the families of the individuals, but again, we will respect their privacy regarding our conversations with them,” said Karine Jean-Pierre.

“Attacks on U.S. citizens are unacceptable no matter where or under what circumstances, circumstances they happen,” she continued. “We will continue to work closely with the Mexican government to ensure justice is done in this case,” she added.

Tamaulipas state governor, Américo Villarreal said n Tuesday that one of the surviving Americans was wounded and the other was not. While two of the four Americans who traveled to Mexico were found dead, Reuters reported first.

The concerned four citizens were taken into custody after being caught in the crossfire of rival rug cartels shortly after crossing the Mexico border. The kidnapping is believed to be a case of mistaken identity.

The group of friends was traveling to Mexico for “tummy tuck” cosmetic surgery via their minivan. They were not thought to be the intended target of the attack.

The group crossed from Brownsville, Texas, into the Mexican city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, an area that has been deeply impacted by cartel violence and carries a travel advisory from the State Department warning Americans to avoid visiting.

The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the return of the victims and arrests of those responsible.
