Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar stated that one suspect has been apprehended, and that deputies are seeking to locate another suspect who was involved in a vehicle chase before fleeing inside Ingram Park Mall.

As of around 5:30 pm Friday, those inside the mall were urged to shelter in place.

According to the sheriff’s office on Facebook, “This is not an active shooter event. It is unknown if the suspect has a weapon and we are still actively working to identify the suspect.”

During a news conference Friday evening, Salazar said the pursuit began around 5 pm after a woman in a neighbourhood near Potranco and Grosenbacher reported hearing bullets fired from a vehicle.

Fearing for her and her children’s safety, the woman went inside and dialled 911, providing a description of the car to the dispatcher, according to the sheriff.

Shortly after the call, deputies spotted the vehicle in the vicinity and determined it was stolen. When they tried to approach the vehicle, the driver fled and ended up in Ingram Mall after a protracted chase, according to Salazar.

According to the sheriff, the two people inside the vehicle then bailed out at the side of the mall where H&M is located.

Deputies were able to hold a 16- or 17-year-old guy, according to Salazar, but the second person escaped into the mall and was later unable to be found.

At this time, the suspect’s identification is unclear, however, he is described as having a medium frame, wearing a black and blue shirt, and wearing black shoes. Salazar stated that he may be armed.

The sheriff stated that SWAT troops and K-9 units are combing the mall store by store for the culprit. Salazar, on the other hand, believes the suspect may have already left the mall.

Salazar is encouraging customers to remain in their establishments until a SWAT team member arrives.

Meanwhile, deputies are stationed at the mall exits, according to Salazar. More than 40 deputies are on the site, and medic tactical teams from SAPD and SAFD are supporting the response in case anyone is injured.
