Elon Musk found himself facing some important questions from Twitter users after he expressed his opinion about adults making irreversible changes to children below the age of consent.

“This is a major problem. I will be actively lobbying to criminalize making severe, irreversible changes to children below the age of consent. Shame on those who advocate this! It is utterly contemptible,” he said in a tweet on Friday, June 2. “Shame on those who advocate this! It is utterly contemptible.”

He tweeted this in response to a tweet by @TheRabbitHole84, who wrote, “Yes, there is a cost to putting kids on Puberty Blockers. For example: – Bone density growth (on average) flatlines – “The teen’s bone density plummeted — as much as 15% in some bones — from average levels to the range of osteoporosis, a condition of weakened bones.”

Although the SpaceX founder was merely referring to gender affirmation surgery, many people wanted to know if Musk was also opposed to circumcision, a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin, the skin that covers the tip of the penis. In the US, it is often done before a new baby leaves the hospital after being born. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has said that there are medical benefits and risks to circumcision.

Here are a few reactions to Musk’s tweet:

The question was raised in people’s minds after independent reporter Ed Krassenstein compared sex change surgeries to circumcision.

“The argument over the use of puberty blockers and hormones in minors is an interesting one. I believe it’s caused by a desire to alienate a group of people and to create culture wars. If minors are too young for consent shouldn’t there also be debates over circumcision? Shouldn’t that child wait until adulthood too? If minors are too young for consent shouldn’t there be more outrage over Child marriage that occurs much more frequent than gender affirming care? If minors are too young for consent shouldn’t there be outrage over virtually every other non-lifesaving medical treatment in children? What about ADHD treatment? What about surgery on children born with multiple sex organs? People rationalize what they believe is “right” based on their own life scenarios and how ”strange” something seems to them. Culture wars are real. I don’t agree in sex change surgeries in children but if a parent, doctor and psychologist believe a child is better off in the long run taking puberty blockers, then keep politics out of it,” he wrote. in an extensive tweet.

Many people also did not agree with him comparing the two procedures.
