Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram might be banned in India if they fail to comply with the government%u2019s new intermediary guidelines.  

The Ministry of  Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in February gave three months time to all the social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to comply with the new IT rules.

So far, only Koo, the Indian version of Twitter has compiled the new guidelines of the government. Earlier, the US-based social media platform Facebook demanded six months time from the government as they were waiting for a response from their headquarter.

As per the new rules, all social media platforms need to appoint a compliance officer from India. The duty of the compliance officer will be to check the content, monitor the complaints, and remove objectionable content.

The guideline further added that the committee will have full power and will be eligible to take action against any complaint on the violation of the code of ethics.

As per the guidelines, May 25 is the last day to comply with the new rules.

Government data shows that there are around 53 crores users of Whatsapp, 21 crores on Instagram, 41 crores on Facebook,  1.75 crores on Twitter, and 44.8 on Youtube, reported business today.
