The background of these hearings are rooted in the capitol attack of Jan 6, 2021. On this day, a mob of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol building to prevent a joint session of Congress in order to stop them from counting the electoral college votes which would formally announce Joe Biden as the new President. The Committee investigating this incident stated that the attack was a culmination of a 7-part plan by President Trump to overturn the election.

The Committee held a public hearing on July 27,2021 and began live telecast of the same on June 9,2022. The first hearing held that President Trump tried to stay in power even after his defeat in the 2020 elections. The second hearing was aimed at evidence showing that Trump knew he lost and most of his trusted circle knew that claims of fraud did not have merit.

The third hearing examined how Trump and others pressured Vice President Mike Pence to reduce electoral votes and overturn the election by unconstitutional means. The fourth hearing had witnesses who testified that they were pressured to “find votes” for Trump and change results in their jurisdictions.
The fifth hearing focused on Trump’s pressure campaign on the Justice Department to consolidate his narrative of a stolen election. The sixth hearing revealed that White House officials knew, days in advance of January 6, that violence was possible. The seventh hearing presented links between then-President Donald Trump and the extreme domestic militias that helped coordinate the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
