The January 6 committee‘s seventh session largely focused on two things: The role of former President Donald Trump‘s social media posts before the riots and the involvement of right-wing groups like Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. The hearing was largely headed by US House Representatives Stephanie Murphy and Jamie Raskin.

Two witnesses took the center stage on Tuesday. Stephen Ayres, who pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, and Jason Van Tatenhove, a former Oath Keeper.

Here are 3 key takeaways from the January 6 hearing on July 12, Tuesday:

Trump’s draft tweet

The panel showed a draft tweet from Trump, undated and never sent, that said “Please arrive early, massive crowds expected. March to the Capitol after. Stop the Steal!” And they showed texts and email exchanges between planners and White House aides about a secret plan for the march.

Liz Cheney’s charge of witness tampering

Liz Cheney, the vice-chair of the committee, said that Trump had allegedly contacted one of the future witnesses of the panel. The panel, however, did not reveal the identity of the possible witness.

The witness did not take the call, according to Cheney, who added that the witness was someone the public has not yet heard from, according to AP reports. The US Department of Justice had already been alerted about the possible witness tampering from Trump’s side.

A rioter’s apology

Stephen Ayres, who testified before the committee on Tuesday, was seen walking up to law enforcement officials so that he could apologise to them. He was seen speaking to Metropolitan Police Officers Harry Dunn, Michael Fanone, and US Capitol Police Sgt Aquilino Gonell, who were injured while defending the Capitol complex on January 6, 2021.

Stephen Ayres, who is scheduled to be sentenced in September, said he was in Washington on January 6 at the behest of Trump, and that he left the Capitol when Trump told them in a tweet to leave.
