Immediately after the statement went viral, he became the target of ridicule online. David A. Clarke, former sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, wrote: “Pence is committing political suicide. Somebody take the knife away from him as he slits his throat.”

Here are some more reactions from people on Twitter:

After his former running mate and current Republican primary rival was indicted on charges related to trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, Pence said in a statement: “Today’s indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States.” Pence further added that although the ex-president is “entitled to the presumption of innocence, our country is more important than one man.”

“Our constitution is more important than any one man’s career,” Pence said.

People are also wondering if Pence is going to testify in the trial against Trump. The indictment, in question does mention Pence by name. The document, unveiled by the Justice Department on Tuesday talks about the ways in which Trump leaned on his former vice president in the days leading up to the infamous January 6 capitol riots. Part of it says that the 45th POTUS encouraged his VP to refuse to certify the results of the 2020 election, in which Trump was defeated by present President Joe Biden.

When Pence tried to get Trump to see sense, telling him repeatedly that he did not have the power to carry out his boss’ request, Trump reportedly told Pence that “you’re too honest.” Pence was called to testify in front of the grand jury that delivered the indictment, as mentioned in his book, So Help Me God.

According to the indictment, Trump continued to allegedly press on Pence to find a way to overturn the election. When Pence called him on December 25, 2020 to wish him “Merry Christmas,” Pence added during the conversation, “I don’t think I have the authority to change the outcome,” the indictment stated.
