A landslide in Juneau has caused a power outage in parts of the Alaska capital and Douglas Island. At least two homes have been damaged in the Gastineau Avenue. No injuries have been reported yet. 

People were asked to stay at least a block away from the area, which experienced the landslide. A tree was knocked down across Gastineau Avenue, destrouing a power pole that caused power outages.

Police closed off the street and firefighters asked residents to evacuate homes. When enough debris is cleared Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. will work to restore power to the area, local radio station KTOO reported. 

AEL&P tweeted at 6:23 PM Monday that there was a “significant landslide on Gastineau Ave. with lines down.”

 A hydrologist with the National Weather Service office in Juneau, Aaron Jacobs, told KTOO that one-to-three inches of rain had fallen in the last 24 hours

“Two-to-three more inches were expected to fall by Tuesday morning,” he added.

A local resident Evan Hartung, as per the Juneau Empire, said that he was eating dinner and watching television at the house when he heard a rumbling sound outside. He managed to escape as a tree fell onto the stairs. 

“My truck is squished,” he said.

Sarah Wallace, another resident, said she and her partner were at home next door when she heard the noise.

“When we saw him out the window he was running outside without any shoes,” she said.

Firefighters knocked on doors along the street to tell residents about the evacuation.
