Kentucky State Fair was closed early on Saturday after gunshots were reportedly fired at the venue, resulting in several arrests.

Gunshots were fired in the midway near the big slide ride around 9pm on Saturday, sending people running from the scene, Courier Journal reported.

The Kentucky State Police issued a statement saying that they began a “soft close” of the fair at 10 pm and that no injuries were reported.

“Around 10:00 pm EST this evening the Kentucky State Fair Board announced a soft close to ensure the safety of all guests after suspicious activity was reported to law enforcement. At this time, KSP can confirm there have been no reported injuries,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, state troopers tackled an individual fleeing from them outside the big tent and took him into custody. The individual, who appeared to be a juvenile, was one of the many people arrested, Courier Journal reported.

“Several individuals have been arrested, with charges pending. The identity of these individuals are not yet being released and the investigation remains ongoing. More information will be released later,” Kentucky State Police said in the statement.

The Kentucky State Fair also issued a statement saying the staff took “immediate action to ensure the safety of all guests.”

“At approximately 9:20 p.m. we were made aware of a situation in front of The Midway and have taken immediate action to ensure the safety of all guests. We are working diligently with The Kentucky State Police (KSP) who are on-site investigating and securing the premises. KSP is leading the investigation and security of our premises. As a precaution, The Kentucky State Fair began a soft close at approximately 10:00 p.m. Updates will be provided as information becomes available,” the fair organisers said in the statement.
