In a surprising turn of events, Kevin McCarthy, who recently lost the Speaker’s position in the House of Representatives, is contemplating an early resignation from his congressional career. Two sources familiar with the matter revealed this information to POLITICO.

While McCarthy had initially indicated his intention to stay in his role at least until the upcoming speakership election next week, his recent defeat has led to a change in plans. During a closed-door meeting with fellow Republicans shortly after eight House Republicans joined Democrats in stripping him of the gavel, McCarthy expressed his desire to return home.

“I’m going to spend time with my family,” McCarthy stated during the meeting, although his remarks were somewhat overshadowed by the heated atmosphere among lawmakers.

Despite the sudden shift in his tone, some Republicans are considering McCarthy as a potential candidate for Speaker once again, arguing that no one else can secure the necessary 218 Republican votes for the position. This comes as Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Steve Scalise emerge as frontrunners in the upcoming race for Speaker, with uncertainty surrounding their ability to secure the position.

Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) emphasized the need to restore Kevin McCarthy as Speaker, urging dissenting members to reconsider their decision and rectify the situation.

Regardless of his House status, McCarthy remains committed to contributing to GOP matters. During the closed-door conference meeting on Tuesday, he assured his fellow members of his continued support, stating, “I’ll do anything I can to help almost all of you. Don’t worry, I’ve raised a helluva lot of money in the last hour.” However, he made it clear that he would not seek the Speaker’s gavel again.

The future of Kevin McCarthy’s political career and the Republican Party’s leadership in the House of Representatives hang in the balance as these developments unfold.
