In order to shorten the long spell between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, Labor Day is more than just an extra Monday off in September.

The purpose of Labor Day, according to the official Department of Labor website, is to commemorate the “creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
