“Now the real work begins”, US Representative Liz Cheney said in a speech minutes after losing her Wyoming primary election on Tuesday. The Republican dropped a major hint for a 2024 White House run.

Cheney drew comparisons to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US President who ended slavery in the United States. Lincoln suffered a huge defeat in Congressional elections before he “won the most important election of all”, Cheney said referring to the US presidency.

Liz Cheney lost the election on Tuesday to Harriet Hageman, who was endorsed by former US President Donald Trump. Cheney will continue to serve till her term ends in January. While Joe Biden has not dropped major hints of a 2024 comeback, Trump has only stopped short of officially announcing his bid.

Cheney was born and raised in a deeply Republican family and state. Her father, Dick Cheney, is a former US Vice President. However, media reports suggest that if and when Liz Cheney announces her bid for the White House, she may run as an independent.

The former President was quick to react to Cheney’s loss on Tuesday, saying that it was “a complete rebuke” of the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Cheney is the panel’s vice chair.

Liz Cheney too dedicated an entire section of her speech on Tuesday to slamming Trump. “Our great nation, must not be ruled by a mob provoked over social media”, she said.

“I have said since January 6 that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office — and I mean it”, Liz Cheney added.

“Our duty as citizens of this republic is not only to defend the freedom that has been handed down to us. We also have an obligation to learn from the actions of those who came before.”
