A preschool in Miami has been catching a lot of attention on the internet for celebrating Black History Month by dressing up the kids in blackface. The photos from the incident were circulated creating a huge controversy.
After seeing the photos on the school’s internal app, parents were outraged and questioned the school authorities. Even though the school has apologized, no disciplinary action has been taken against the teacher.
What happened at Miami Pre-school?
The concerned pre-school goes by the name Studio Kids @Little River. On February 3, the school was celebrating Black History month. Subsequently, the photos of at least two toddlers,2, wearing dark makeup to resemble black face, were posted. Additionally, the kids were also wearing construction worker costumes in the same image.
When parents noticed this event, they began to call out the racist behavior from the school. They immediately brought it up to the preschool’s director, Patricia Vitale. One of the parent reportedly claimed that Vitale downplayed the racist nature of it. As a matter of fact, he even asked why it is such a big deal.
However afterwards, Vitale did send an apology letter to all the parents. He wrote, “We have not intended to offend anyone, and we’re sorry about any inconvenience.”
Vitale’s apology didn’t have an impact on the parents and a few parents even decided to pull their kids out of the school. Following which, Vitale sent a more sincere and serious message to everyone. The message read, “We wanted to let all the parents know that we met on Friday afternoon with all the teachers and staff”. He went on to mention all the necessary steps taken by the school to avoid such events in the future.
