According to the police, three more children were also inside the apartment, however, were able to leave when the shooting took place late Tuesday night, August 30, 2022.

“Sad day. Sad, sad day,” Nicholas Armold, the director of the Portage Department of Public Safety said. “Horrible night. Horrible week,” he added.

The authorities said police officers received reports of a shooting and potential hostages just after 9 pm on Tuesday and reached the scene. The reports suggested the shooting took place inside an apartment on Milham Avenue near Sprinkle Road in Portage, Michigan. The authorities activated the SWAT when the officers did not receive any response from inside the apartment where the shooting took place, which was described as “totally silent” by one of the officers.

The SWAT managed to enter the room, where the bodies of the three people were discovered.

“We were trying to see if we could get in there and rescue whoever was in there,” the PDPS director said. “But unfortunately we were too late for that,” he added.
