Following his public fight with former President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he would support Trump if he becomes the 2024 presidential nominee of the Republican party.

This comes roughly two weeks after McConnell condemned Trump for January 6 capitol attack.

Asked whether he would back Trump if he got the nomination, McConnell told Fox News, “The nominee of the party? Absolutely.”

Donald Trump had called McConnell an “unsmiling political hack” and blamed him for weakening the Republic Party after the minority leader blamed him for the Capitol attack.

During his interview with Fox News, however, the Senate leader stopped short of giving his immediate support to Trump. This is because there could be many contenders for the 2024 presidential nominee. According to McConnell’s subtle hints, there are many Republicans who have hinted their interest to run for the 2024 elections.

McConnell said, ” to happen between now and ’24. I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning on running for president, plus some governors and others. There’s no incumbent. It should be a wide-open race and fun for you all to cover.”

The Senate leader also expressed his desire to focus on retaking the Senate and the House back in 2022 and said he didn’t “have any further observations” on Trump’s role in Republicans losing the special elections for Georgia’s Senate seats.

While maintaining that there was no “civil war” with the Republican party. Trump may run for re-election in 2024 as he is still popular among Republican voters. According to Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Trump would win the nomination again.
