An Amtrak train pulling seven cars collided with an irrigation tractor in Moorpark, causing a partial derailment and requiring the evacuation of the train’s passengers.

Emergency personnel from the Ventura County Fire Department were called to the 11100 W. Block of Los Angeles Avenue at around 11:20 a.m. An irrigation vehicle was involved in a collision at this location, which is surrounded by big farmland. The truck, which was thought to belong to Ventura County, received severe damage and was labeled a total loss. The truck was reportedly traveling to a nearby ranch when the accident happened, according to sources.

After the incident, Amtrak issued a statement, “On June 28, 2023, Amtrak train 14 was traveling from Los Angeles to Seattle at approx. 11:15 a.m. PT when it struck a water truck obstructing the tracks at Moorpark, Calif. There were approximately 198 passengers and 13 crew onboard who were evacuated from the train, with no reports of serious injuries. The train derailed as a result of the impact but remained upright. Amtrak is working with customers to make alternate travel arrangements. Amtrak, in coordination with local authorities, is conducting a full investigation.”
All of the 15 people who were hospitalized after the collision had minor injuries, with the exception of the truck driver, who was transferred to a trauma facility. A fire also started below one of the railway cars, but it was quickly put out. At the time of the event, there were 13 crew members and roughly 200 passengers riding the train.

The Coast Starlight, an Amtrak train number 14, was headed to Seattle and was due to stop in Oxnard after that. All passengers were taken in a safe manner to the Moorpark Senior Center at 799 Moorpark Avenue following the crash.
