Muskingum University students were asked to shelter in place after a shooting was reported on the campus in New Concord. Sheriff’s Office said that one person is in custody.

One person was taken into custody and police were no longer searching for additional suspects, according to a Facebook post by Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting happened at around 7 pm at North Turf, located on the campus of the liberal art school of 1,500 students, according to a notice released on Friday on the University website. 

All Muskingum faculty, staff and students were reportedly safe. The university has asked students to take shelter in place until further notice. It said that it will update the community as soon as it gets further information.

A large enforcement presence has been reported in the New Concord area. 

The investigation is under process and access to campus north of the Thomas Hall parking lot is prohibited. The University has canceled all athletic events scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, March 18 and 19, after the incident. 

Muskingum University is a private institution in New Concord, one hour east of Columbus. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, the institute was chartered as Muskingum College in 1837.
