Two Duke basketball players face charges related to a driving while impaired (DWI) arrest ahead of the team’s home game against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, according to a media report. Michael Savarino, the grandson of former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, was arrested on suspicion of DWI, while star freshman Paolo Banchero has been charged with aiding and abetting DWI, court records show. Both players were arrested in Orange County, North Carolina, on Sunday and have court dates related to the case scheduled for next month.

“We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team,” the Duke athletic department said in a statement released to the News & Observer. “Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”

North Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Christopher Knox said Savarino was stopped for a traffic violation while driving on Brushy Creek Road outside Hillsborough. A breathalyzer test of Savarino showed a blood alcohol content of .08. The vehicle was registered in Banchero’s name and he was charged with aiding and abetting DWI and released at the site of the traffic stop. According to the citation, Banchero was a passenger in the back seat.

Savarino is the son of Duke assistant athletic director Debbie Savarino, the oldest of Krzyzewski ‘s three daughters. He joined the program as a walk-on in 2019 and was given a scholarship in the offseason. He played four minutes on Friday in Duke’s 82-56 win over Army in which he recorded one rebound.

Banchero, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, is averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for the Blue Devils through three games. He scored 18 points with seven rebounds in Duke’s 67-56 win over Campbell on Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
