The man who killed at least five people, including an off-duty police officer in Neuse River Greenway, Raleigh, was taken into custody, the police department announced. Two others, including a Raleigh Police K9 officer, were transported to a hospital.

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin told reporters that multiple people were shot on the Neuse River Greenway around 5 PM on Thursday and that the police department told her around 8 PM that the suspect had been “contained” at a residence in the area.

Contradictory tweets by Knightdale city and Raleigh Police regarding the status of the suspect’s capture had citizens confused. While the former tweeted the white male was caught and in custody, the police department, only 10 minutes later, informed that the situation was active.

“This is still an active investigation. Sections of the Hedingham neighborhood remain closed. Residents should follow the directions of law enforcement officials on the scene,” Raleigh Police tweeted minutes after Knightdale’s announcement.
