The New York State Senate has voted to repeal Governor Andrew Cuomo’s expanded emergency executive powers on Friday. The bill was passed by a vote that went according to party stances.
The Republican Party was not happy with the bill with all 20 Republican senators saying that it does not go far enough to curtail Cuomo’s power and voted against it.
“Today, under this new legislation the governor will no longer be able to issue any new directives, period,” CNN quoted Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins as saying.
“In light of recent events, however, it is clear that we need to move toward a system of increased oversight, review and verification between the Legislature and the executive branch, and also limit the powers granted to the governor,” She added.
The bill will now go to the State Assembly and it is expected to pass the bill later on Friday.
After its passage in the Assembly, the next stop would be Cuomo’s desk who had earlier said that he supported the bill.
Democrats anyway hold a veto-proof majority if he refuses to sign it.
