The House Select Committee in charge of the January 6 investigations, will be treating the next hearing on Thursday, October 13, as a closing argument ahead of the midterms in November. It will also be seeking to establish the fact that ex-President Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to democracy ahead of the presidential election in 2024, CNN reported.

According to CNN, witnesses will not make in-person appearances in the hearing on Thursday and there will be new testimonies and evidence that the panel has unearthed. The last hearing of the January 6 attack on Capitol Hill was in July this year and since then, the committee has been interviewing former members of Donald Trump’s cabinet. It has also received thousands of communications from the Secret Service in connection with the attack.

“We discovered through our work through this summer what the President’s intentions were, what he knew, what he did, what others did,” committee member Rep. Zoe Lofgren said.

According to reports, Thursday’s evidence will be coming in from new witnesses which might include Mike Pompeo, Steve Mnuchin and Elaine Chao, all members of the Trump administration.

Since the last hearing in July 2022, Trump has found himself in several investigations, including by the FBI and the Justice Department. The October 13 hearing is also a month ahead of the midterm elections.

“There remains a clear and present danger to our electoral system and to democratic institutions. So, that is something that will come through in our final hearing. This is not ancient history we’re talking about, this is a continuing threat,” Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin said.

“I think the single most urgent question is OK, what is the continuing clear and present danger we face now from the forces that Donald Trump unleashed,” Raskin added.

Committee member Rep. Zoe Lofgren has said that the hearing will be “worth watching” and the new evidence that will be presented is “pretty surprising.”

The evidence that will be presented on Thursday is expected to include Secret Service emails as well as video footage, reports have suggested.
