Firefighters in Ocala reported that an apartment complex was evacuated after a child set off fireworks there.

Around 11 a.m. on Saturday, a Berkeley Pointe Apartments building was covered in smoke, and flames soon spread throughout the structure. The first level of the building was where the fire was, according to Ocala Fire Rescue.

The fire destroyed four different units in total. There were no reported injuries. A single dog was saved from the flames.

Firefighters were called when there were complaints of a building fire at Berkeley Pointe Apartments, located at 2847 NE Seventh St.

Flames were allegedly visible from the first-floor unit’s back room window, where the fire reportedly started.

According to officials, an investigation showed that a child attempted to light an apartment using a firecracker he took from a package.

Ocala Fire Rescue had this reminder following Saturday’s fire:

“Close supervision and fire education are critical in preventing curiosity from becoming a disaster. As a precaution, Ocala Fire Rescue reminds the public to keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children, up high, and preferably in a locked cabinet,” Ocala Fire Rescue said in a statement.

A dog had to be rescued from one of the residences as well.

Crews discovered that one of the kids had attempted to light a firework inside the house after gaining access to one from a Fourth of July package, which had been purchased, after the fire had been put out.

Firefighters advised locals to watch over kids and teach them about fire safety.
