Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has been roped in to revive the COVID-19 vaccination campaign of the Biden administration. The teen star is being brought in at a time when the rate of vaccinations across the US is on a sharp decline. She will visit the White House on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old will meet President Joe Biden and will feature in videos on the importance of getting vaccinated. Rodrigo will also meet the country’s top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci. On Tuesday, the White House issued a statement saying that Rodrigo would ‘record videos about the importance of young people getting vaccinated’.

The singer and actress will also answer important questions that people often have about getting a COVID-19 vaccine jab. Rodrigo, who has over 14 million followers on Instagram, is expected to add star power to the national vaccination campaign. She is also expected to convince young people to get the coronavirus vaccine.

After a strong period of vaccination drives across the United States the pace has slacked off, with young people among the main groups failing to get their shots. This is despite the fact that America has the highest availability of any vaccines. Biden also narrowly missed his mark of having 70% of adults vaccinated by Independence Day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 48% of the US population has been fully vaccinated and 55.5% have received at least one dose.

The drop in vaccinations comes as the Delta variant of the coronavirus rapidly spreads across the globe. The Delta variant is more transmissible than any previous strain of COVID-19. According to the CDC, the Delta variant accounted for over 50% of COVID cases in the second half of June.
