A Northeastern University staff member was injured after a suspicious package delivered to Holmes Hall detonated after it was opened, the school said Tuesday.

“The staff member sustained minor injuries and is being treated,” Shannon Nargi, a spokesperson for Northeastern University, told CNN in an email.

The Boston Police Department’s Bomb Squad responded to the scene. An investigation is currently underway into the explosion.

The FBI’s Boston Division is coordinating with the Boston Police Department about the explosion.

Holmes Hall – the hub of the school’s “Writing Center activities,” according to Northeastern’s website – was evacuated and a notification was sent to the Boston campus urging people to avoid the area.

It houses several academic departments and is located between Lake and Meserve halls.

Northeastern University police tweeted that evening classes at the Behrakis Health Sciences Center, Shillman Hall, Ryder Hall, Kariotis Hall, Dockser Hall and West Village F are canceled due to the ongoing investigation.

University police also said on Twitter that the “scene at Homes Hall is currently contained,” and that they are working with the Boston Police Department to secure the area.

“We will update members of the Northeastern community when more information is available,” Nargi told CNN.

Meanwhile, ABC 6 reported that a bomb squad was at the scene of a second package near the city’s prestigious Museum of Fine Arts. However, no other details were made public so far.

Mayor Michelle Wu thanked first responders for their “swift, coordinated and effective response” during a press conference. “We want to make sure to emphasize that this is of the utmost priority, the safety and well-being of all of our young people here,” the mayor said.

Authorities did not reveal any potential motive behind Tuesday incident.
