A man crashed his car into a fundraising event for families affected by the recent fatal fire in eastern Pennsylvania on Saturday night August 13, killing one person and injuring 17. He then fled and fatally beat a woman before being apprehended by police, according to the authorities.

“On Saturday, August 13, 2022, at approximately 6:15 p.m. Pennsylvania State Police Bloomsburg received a call to assist Berwick Police Department with a vehicle that drove through a crowd at a community event on West 2nd Street, Berwick Borough, Columbia County,” a statement said.

Around 6:15 p.m., Berwick state police were called to the vicinity of the Intoxicology Department bar. Anthony Petroski of the Pennsylvania State Police informed reporters on Saturday. A car “drove through a throng at a community function,” according to police. Then, according to Petroski, the police received a report that a guy had reportedly attacked a woman in the nearby town of Nescopeck. When the police arrived, a woman was already dead, according to him. Reyes was taken into custody by police after they said he was a suspect in both crimes.

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes, 24, was accused of two counts of criminal homicide on Sunday, August 14. Reyes was charged with two counts of homicide and had bail denied at his arraignment. The Columbia County Correctional Facility is where he is being detained.

Investigations are being done to determine a motive in the two unrelated fatal instances. Four patients were in serious condition, and more than 15 patients were receiving care at Geisinger Hospital, according to a statement from the facility.

The victims’ names weren’t right away made public. On its Facebook page, the restaurant where the event was held on Saturday posted a message. “Today was an absolute tragedy. We will be closed until further notice. Please respect our privacy while we grieve and try to process the events that occurred. Thank you,” the statement read.
