According to The Verge, the firm will gradually increase the distance you may be from real-world Pokestops and Gyms while still interacting with them.

Niantic changed the in-game contact distance back to 40 meters (131 feet) in the US and New Zealand at the beginning of August, much to the chagrin of fans who had liked the increased accessibility advantages and COVID-19 safety the adjustment provided.

Niantic is now committing to keep the increased distance in place permanently, along with other improvements that will be announced on September 1.

All of the specifics are available on Niantic’s changelog, but it’s worth noting the other modifications that are still in effect in the United States.

Niantic’s decision shows that the firm is eager to adapt to the demands of its users. This might be due in part to the internal “task force” created by Niantic to address player concerns and the possibility of a boycott.

According to The Verge, Niantic intends to “publish the task force’s conclusions by the next in-game season change” on September 1. Until then, a larger interaction distance is a smart way to start.
