Former Atlanta police chief Erika Shields, who resigned after a high-profile police shooting last year, has been hired as the next chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department, reported New York Times.

Mayor Greg Fischer announced on Wednesday that Shields, who will become the fourth police chief to lead the department since Breonna Taylor’s killing last March, will replace the city’s interim chief, Yvette Gentry.

Shields’ arrival comes at a time when Louisville is full racial tension and still not over Taylor’s killing that saw subsequent protests and drew thousands of people in the summer and fall.

Milly Martin, a political and social activist in Louisville said, “Erika is definitely coming into chaos. Hopefully, she can handle it.”

Shields, who served as Atlanta’s Police Chief for over three years, resigned in June last year, two days after 27-year-old Black man Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by a police officer.

Garrett Rolfe, who had pulled the trigger, was charged with murder and aggravated assault within a week of the shooting although his case is still awaiting a trial.

Taylor on the other hand, was killed during a raid on her apartment in March and on officer has been charged for that.
