Two police officers were injured in a shooting incident at Vassar Avenue and Bergen Street in the Weequahic neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon. A massive police response is underway at the spot according to Fox News and the gunman in the incident is still at large.

Weequahic neighbourhood has been put on lockdown and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is also at the scene to assist. A tactical firearm unit is also reportedly active there.

ABC News reported that one of the officers was injured in the leg while the other was shot in the neck. Their condition is not yet known. Reports say that the gunman is armed with a sniper rifle.

“I am aware of and closely monitoring an unfolding situation in Newark,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a tweet, “I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”

Tim McNicholas of CBS New York reported on Twitter through a source in law enforcement that officers have surrounded the area from where the gunman has been shooting at officers.

“We’re going from apartment to apartment now, SWAT is in there right now going from apartment to apartment,” Ras Baraka, Newark Mayor, told the media on Tuesday night.

“They gave him instructions, there was a brief altercation, the gentleman pulled a gun out, and shot two police officers at close range. Gunshot was returned, fire was returned. The gentleman retreated into the building. Prayerfully, we can end this with a person in custody this evening,” he added.
