The northwestern state of Washington can expect a second round of heat-related power outages on Tuesday, according to energy company Avista Corp. Washington experienced such outages on Monday after a severe heatwave struck the state that drove up the temperature.

The company said that the outages are being planned as a preventive measure to mitigate the possibility of prolonged outages and extensive damages. The outages aim to “minimize the customer impact, alleviate strain on the electric system”, reported Reuters.

Dennis Vermillion, the CEO of Avista, said in a statement that the state’s electric system experienced a record-breaking demand for power after the temperature increased on Monday.

The situation also “impacted the system in a way that required us to proactively turn off power for some customers”, reported Reuters quoting the company’s press release.

The temperatures are expected to reach 92 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday in the city of Seattle. However, Tuesday’s expected temperatures remain substantially less than the record-breaking measures of Monday, which touched 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The company, which has around 400,000 customers in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, requested the users to conserve energy amid the heatwave and further said that nearly 8,000 homes and businesses can experience heat-related outages on Tuesday.

The outages are expected to start post noon on Tuesday and can last up to 8 pm local time.
