Tripping on stairs is always embarrassing and if the same happens to a world leader, it becomes a subject of memes on social media. The latest US leader to have fallen prey to the memes is none other than President Joe Biden.
President Biden was boarding Air Force One on Friday when he lost his footing and tripped on the steps a couple of times. Though the White House said the 78-year-old president was doing fine following the fall, this incident gave rise to several memes on the internet.
However, he is not the first US leader to have lost footing while boarding or deplaning an aircraft.
In June 2020, former Vice President Mike Pence had almost reached the top of the stairs to an Air Force Two when he tripped. He, however, picked himself up, walked the remaining steps, and showed a thumbs-up sign before entering the aircraft.
President Barack Obama also had a near tumble while deboarding an Air Force One aircraft in March 2015. Obama quickly reacted and righted himself by grabbing onto the rails, then walked down the rest of the steps.
President Gerald Ford was visiting Austria in 1975 when he tumbled down the last few steps of Air Force One. Luckily, he did not suffer injuries and quipped, “I am sorry I tumbled in.”
Meanwhile, following Friday’s incident, White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “So, as you know, it’s pretty windy outside, it’s very windy. I almost fell coming up the steps myself. He is doing 100% fine.”
