At least five people were injured after a suspect opened fire at Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin, on Thursday afternoon.

The shooting took place around 2.45 pm when people were paying their final respects to a 37-year-old man, NBC News reported. 

“Please avoid the area of Graceland Cemetery due to a critical incident,” the Racine Police Department said in a statement.

“There are victims but unknown how many at this time. The scene is still active and being investigated.”

The identities of those injured in the shooting were not immediately known. The extent of their injuries was not known. 

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for nearby Ascension All Saints Hospital said the hospital was placed under lockdown following the shooting.

“The safety of our associates, patients, visitors and providers is our top priority. Due to a situation offsite, increased security measures have been put in place at Ascension All Saints Hospital. Patients are still able to keep previously scheduled appointments and the emergency department is currently accepting patients. However, out of an abundance of caution, the number of open entrances into the hospital has been reduced and additional security screenings have been implemented,”the spokesperson said, TMJ4 reported. 

The Park High School located nearby was also dismissed about 10 minutes later than normal.

Racine is a city located about 30 miles south of downtown Milwaukee. It is less than four miles west of Lake Michigan.
