Several Twitter users demanded Derek Chauvin’s release on Thursday after a picture of George Floyd’s autopsy report, stating his cause of death as ‘drug overdose’ went viral on social media.

We cannot verify if the autopsy picture is authentic. Thursday, May 25 marks Floyd’s third death anniversary.

The picture showed that George Floyd, a Black man, died of a ‘fentanyl drug lethal overdose’. Sharing the report, social media users urged authorities to release Chauvin.

Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was convicted of murdering Floyd in 2020. He pressed his knee into the handcuffed Black man’s neck for over nine minutes. The incident sparked protests across the US.

George Floyd’s heart disease and use of fentanyl were contributing factors to his death, but they were not the direct cause, the medical examiner who performed his autopsy testified on Friday in the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin.

Hennepin County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker ruled Floyd’s death as a homicide. His cause of death was identified as ‘cardiopulmonary arrest’ complicated by ‘restraint, and neck compression’ while he was being subdued by police.

However, social media users, citing ‘drug overdose’ are now demanding Chauvin’s release. The officer is serving a federal sentence of 21 years for violating Floyd’s civil rights and a 22-and-a-half-year sentence on state charges of murder and manslaughter.

“The full Saint Floyd autopsy has been released, confirming that the avid addict and thief didn’t die from blunt force injury, but overdosed. Free Derek Chauvin and give him back his badge, settlement money, and a full repayment of back pay,” a Twitter user said.

“Derek Chauvin is a political prisoner. George Floyd’s autopsy report shows that the cop didn’t kill Floyd,” a second one added.

“Derek Chauvin is innocent and shouldn’t be in jail,” a third one tweeted.
