Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham took to Twitter on Monday to announce that he has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated. He said that he has flu-like symptoms and will be self-quarantining for 10 days.

“I was just informed by the House physician I have tested positive for COVID even after being vaccinated,” the 66-year-old South Carolina Republicans said on Twitter.

Graham said he began experiencing flu-like symptoms two days back and sought medical attention on Monday morning.

“I feel like I have a sinus infection and at present time I have mild symptoms. I will be quarantining for ten days,” he said.

He went on to say that his symptoms would have been worse had he not got vaccinated.

“I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now. My symptoms would be far worse,” he said.

Graham was spotted in the Capitol on Monday morning. He was wearing a mask and appeared to be in a hurry.

Meanwhile, Graham has tested positive amid growing concern about the potential for “breakthrough cases,” or when a fully vaccinated person tests positive for the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that less than 1% of fully vaccinated people in the US have had a breakthrough case that results in hospitalisation or death.

It, however, remained unclear if Graham has tested positive for the Delta variant, which is being blamed for the recent surge in infections in the country, particularly Southern states where vaccination rates are relatively low.

According to Reuters, 46% of South Carolina’s population has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, which is well below the national average of 58%.
