The family of Robert Card, the suspected perpetrator of the double mass shootings in Maine on Wednesday night, has revealed that he had been hearing voices at the locations of the alleged attacks. Card’s family has been in contact with him, urging him to surrender to authorities following the tragic events.

Who is Katie Card?

Katie Card, who is married to Card’s brother, shared that Robert Card had recently begun wearing powerful hearing aids to address hearing loss. Since then, he had been insistent with his family that he could hear people speaking ill of him, including during the attacks at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar and Grill, where he allegedly killed 18 people on Wednesday night.

“He truly believed he was hearing people say things,” Katie Card stated, explaining that this belief had developed in just the past few months.

The series of violent events began around 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston, with another shooting reported about four miles away at Schemengees Bar & Grille. A total of 18 people lost their lives, and 13 others were injured, including children participating in a bowling league.

During a Thursday morning press briefing, officials refrained from discussing why Robert Card may have targeted these locations.

Katie Card further disclosed that her brother-in-law would become upset when they attempted to convince him that the voices were a product of his imagination. His mental health had deteriorated recently, resulting in a lengthy stay at a facility over the summer.
