The United States
Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark judgement that
granted federal abortion rights. Now, private companies have come forward to
ensure that women employees do not have to give up control over their bodies.
Several corporate groups have come up with policies that enable women to access
safe abortions. These include some of the biggest internet companies in the
world.

Amazon, the
second-largest employer in the United States, has said that it will pay up to
$4,000 in travel expenses for non-life-threatening medical treatments. This includes
elective abortion. The benefit will apply if abortion care is not available
within 100 miles of an employee’s home, according to a Reuters report. For
life-threatening treatments, Amazon offers $10,000 in travel reimbursements.

Apple, the iPhone-maker,
said the company’s health insurance provider will cover costs of employees who
seek to get an abortion. The benefit was rolled out last year after Texas brought
in an anti-abortion legislation. Costs will be covered if abortion is unavailable
in the employee’s state.

Microsoft, Bill
Gates’ brainchild, has also decided to pay for employees to travel to states
where abortion is legal and obtain abortions. “This support is being extended
to include travel expense assistance for these and other medical services where
access to care is limited in availability in an employee’s home geographic
region,” the company said in a statement to Reuters.

Yelp was one of
the first companies to announce pay for travel and out-of-state abortions. The
company said it wants its employees to have equal access to healthcare. “We’ve
long been an advocate for equality at the workplace, and believe that gender equality
cannot be achieved if women’s healthcare rights are restricted,” said Yelp’s
chief diversity officer Miriam Warren.

On Friday, after
the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppleman said the
court’s ruling “puts women’s health in jeopardy” and “threatens to dismantle
the progress we’ve made on gender equality.”

Other companies
that have decided to support women employees seeking abortions in state where
the procedure is illegal are: Bumble, Meta Platforms Inc, Citigroup, Conde
Nast, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Disney, JP Morgan, Lyft and Uber.
