The United States
Supreme Court Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark judgement that
granted federal protections to abortions. Now, policy around abortion will lie
directly with states. Many states in the US have anti-abortion laws in place which
have been triggered just as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Three
states – South Dakota, Louisiana and Kentucky – have laws that ban most
abortions with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The legality
aspect will become clearer in a few days but for now there’s a great deal of
confusion on where abortion remains legal. States that have trigger laws, which
means those where federal abortion rights end with the overturning of Roe v.
Wade, will require the attorney general of the state to certify that the Supreme
Court’s opinion does indeed overturn Roe v. Wade. When this happens, it might
take up to 30 days for the laws to actually kick in.
Abortion is
expected to remain legal in 27 states, according to a POLITICO report. Although
the laws surrounding legal abortion are not uniform in those states. Four
states that allow abortion throughout pregnancy are Colorado, New Jersey,
Oregon and Delaware.

The US Supreme
Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a 5-4 decision. The court’s decision comes
after Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion suggested the overturning of Roe v.
Wade. The court’s three liberal justices filed a dissenting opinion to the
ruling.
