Author Salman Rushdie, whose several writings generated death threats, was attacked and stabbed in the neck on stage Friday before giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York.
The 75-year-old was airlifted to a local hospital where he was receiving treatment for his injuries.
As fans pray for his recovery, here’s a look into Rushdie’s married life and children.
The Midnight’s Children author has been married four times.
Salman Rushdie married Indian-American actress, model, and host of the American reality television show Top Chef Padma Lakshmi in 2004. They got married after living together for five years. In July 2007, the couple filed for divorce. They did not have any children together.
They had met in 1999 at a party in New York when Lakshmi was 28 and Rushdie was 51. At the time, he was married to his third wife Elizabeth West.
In 2016, Padma Lakshmi wrote in an autobiography about her failed marriage to Rushdie.
“I just wanted my own identity. I was making the transition out of one stage of my life and into another. But in order to do that, it required that I wasn’t everywhere that he [Rushdie] needed me to be,” she told People magazine at the time.
Salman Rushdie married author Elizabeth West in 1997. The couple ended their relationship in 2004 just before Rushdie got married to Padma Lakshmi. When Rushdie met Lakshmi, he was already married to West. Rushdie and West have a son together named Milan.
Rushdie and novelist Marianne Wiggins got married in 1988. Just a year after their marriage, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a Fatwa ordering Rushdie’s assassination for alleged blasphemy in his book, The Satanic Verses. By that time, Wiggins had told Rushdie that she wished to end their marriage. However, she went into hiding with him. The couple divorced in 1993.
Rushdie got married to his first wife Clarissa Luard in 1976. The couple called it quits in 1987 after Rushdie got in a relationship with Australian writer Robyn Davidson, to whom he was introduced by their mutual friend Bruce Chatwin. Rushdie and Luard have a son named Zafar, who was born in 1979.
