Transgender activist Sarah McBride on Tuesday won her party’s nomination for a seat from Delaware in the state Senate, making her the first transgender person in the United States to be elected for the post, as per CNN report.

McBride secured a landslide victory getting 91% of the votes for the Democratic primary in Delaware’s first district, Delaware Department of Elections said.

McBride expressed her message of hope on Twitter and wrote: “Tonight sends a powerful signal that candidates like me can win.”

“Everyone deserves to see themselves in government, to follow their dreams, and to be accepted by their community. I will never take for granted the honour of carrying that mantle,” she added.

McBride is a Human Rights Campaign spokesperson and has been favoured to win the election against Republican candidate Steve Washington in November, reported CNN. McBride will contest from a heavily Democratic district which includes the city of Wilmington.

The district’s incumbent, Democratic state Senator Harris McDowell has planned to retire after the end of his term in 2020, having served the district for nearly four decades.

McBride ran her campaign on issues like expanding access to healthcare and paid leave, she also raised her voice on increasing Delaware’s minimum wage and talked about bringing appropriate reformation in the criminal justice system.

If McBride is elected in November, she will become Delaware’s first openly LGBTQ person elected to the state legislature. McBride made history in 2016 by becoming the first transgender person to address a Democratic National Convention in 2016. She was also the first out transgender White House staffer to intern for the Obama administration.
