Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican, wants employees of the FBI and Justice Department to blow the whistle on the recent search operation in Mar-a-Lago, which is former US President Donald Trump’s residence in Florida. The raid was carried out earlier this week on Monday.

Johnson, who recently fought and won his Wisconsin primary, sent a letter to the federal departments urging employees to contact his office to report any possible wrongdoing in the process. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday said he “personally approved” a request to carry out the raid.

“You have a right to talk to Congress”, Johnson said in the letter, which was obtained by The Daily Caller. Like other members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, Johnson asked the FBI and Justice Department to provide detailed statements justifying the raid.

However, the Daily Caller reported that Johnson demonstrated mistrust in the statements that will be provided by the federal agencies. He cited the “history of lack of transparency and obstruction” in the FBI and DoJ’s investigations.

According to reports from Washington Post, the federal agents who searched Trump’s residence were looking for classified documents containing information about America’s nuclear programme. It is unclear if the documents were found.

Various US lawmakers have since spoken out in support of the former President, calling the raid “unprecedented” and “unfair”. Some even directly linked the search to the Democratic party.

Some Republican allies of Trump have called for the FBI to be defunded. Large numbers of Trump supporters have called for the warrant to be released hoping it will show that Trump was unfairly targeted.

FBI officials have also been facing threats after conducting the search. The agency’s office in Ohio’s Cincinnati was also attacked by Ricky Schiffer. He is the suspect in a shooting incident in which he was fatally shot by law enforcement officials.
